If you’ve driven down 2nd street in the last 8 months, you probably noticed a new neighbor - Quench Wine and Spirits. The Memphis DNA had a chance to speak with owner Hamida Mandani and get the scoop on our new local wine shop.
Hamida opened Quench in July of 2015, wanting to offer downtown “a unique, boutique style wine shopping experience.” If you’ve been inside, you know it’s not your typical liquor store. There are chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and a beautiful wooden checkout counter. In addition to the elegant ambiance, Quench prides itself on a knowledgeable staff and competitive pricing. They offer over 350 varieties of reds and over 200 varieties of whites.
The checkout counter is Hamida’s favorite part of the store - and for good reason! It’s a beautiful piece created from reclaimed wood from a neighboring construction site. Hamida designed it herself and had it constructed by artist and local carpenter, Brian Skinny. She wanted something simple, warm, and personal to welcome customers.
Hamida is originally from Bombay and has lived in Memphis since 2007. She also owns City Market (downtown and recently Midtown) with her husband. They have a three year old daughter and live downtown. “We love food and people,” says Hamida.
Hamida hopes that Quench provides a central, walkable option for downtowners. “Wine is special to most people,” she says. “It’s part of their special moments - weddings, romantic date nights, graduations, bridal showers and other occasions. When our customers leave satisfied and happy, it’s a great feeling.”
We asked Hamida what her all time favorite wine was, and she said it’s a tie between two Josh Cellars wines: the 2014 California Chardonnay and the 2013 California Cabernet Sauvignon. She recommends them for your next cocktail party. “It’s as if they were made for a festive get-together,” says Hamida.
Looking for something local? Quench recently added two Tennessee varieties to their collection. Both are from Arrington Vineyards outside Nashville, owned by country music artist Kix Brooks of Brooks & Dunn. The winery sources its fruit locally and from the West Coast to make, in Hamida’s words, “world class wines.” Get your bottle of Stag’s White and Red Fox Red blends before they run out!
And if those suggestions don’t do it for you, Quench will do custom orders for locals downtown and help you find exactly what you’re looking for. Quench also does monthly wine tastings, and will deliver bulk orders directly to you. In addition, every Thursday is ladies night, and women save 10% on any wine.
Check out Quench’s facebook page for info on upcoming tastings, and you can sign up for their monthly newsletter at the store. When you’re there, be sure to use your special DNA discount (at the bottom of the April newsletter) and give them a warm welcome to the neighborhood!
